LOUISVILLE BICYCLE CLUB
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
JUNE 14 2009

Action Items:

Earl – Talk to Larry Preble re: “grade profile” for OKHT routes
Jim - Contact Robin at Sawyer re: banquet reservation
Tom – talk with Barry Zalph concerning Bike Ed programs

The meeting was held at Bluegrass Brewing Co, after the 2pm Sunday ride. Those present were Tom Armstrong, Earl Jones, Kevin Jones, Mark Luking, Andy Murphy, Jim Tretter & Barbara Tretter. Those absent were: David Ryan.

TOURING: Tour de Olmsted went well, but there was not as much participation from the general public as they would have liked. Around 200 people did the family ride, about 178 racers participated in the race & about 25-30 club members did the 8:30 ride. The Olmstead organizers said they would like to hold this event again next year.

PICNIC: The picnic will be held on Sunday, August 9, at the Farnsley Morman House and Joe Thomas has taken the lead in getting it organized this year. We can rent the pavilion for $50/hour, and we only pay for the time we are actually there, not during the rides. Joe has also contacted a caterer, and the club members will each bring a dish to share. Jim has written an article for the Newsletter, and all other rides for that day will be cancelled.

NEW BUSINESS: The Ex Comm received a request from a local group who has set up a web site for bike rentals in various cities, including Louisville. We agreed to put them on our “Links” on our Web page, and people can pull their company up that way.

Two weeks ago, two riders went down on River Road, just south of Frankfort Ave. There was a lot of discussion on the Kycyclist, which caught the attention of Scott Render, from Metro Louisville. Since then, the city has put down some asphalt, but it is only a patch job and apparently some of the patch is already starting to deteriorate. There is a meeting on Tuesday night out on Rose Island Rd that will discuss the future paving, etc of River Road.

Jim had a card from the LAB, which shows cyclists the “5 Rules for the Road”. It is short & concise, so we will have David put it in the next newsletter.

OKHT: Jim said the registrations are coming in good. We have about 55 so far. The numbers for the jerseys are looking good also. Mark said Lynn has received requests to put the routes on the web site. This has been discussed every year, and for liability reasons, it is always decided not to put them up. Earl will contact Larry Preble, to see if he would be able to put the “grade profile” on the website for all the routes on Sat & Sun. That way people can see the degree of difficulty, and we are not giving them the exact roads.

BANQUET: Jim said he would really like to have the Banquet at the new facility at Tom Sawyer State Park. He will look into getting a caterer, who would also have a liquor license. He will contact Robin at Sawyer about reserving the room for a Sat night in January, 2010.

SIGNAGE FOR BAD SPOTS IN ROADS: Jim said he dropped this idea.

CLUB DIRECTORY: Jim has sent the membership file to Kevin. Kevin has worked it up & it will go out with the next newsletter, either in PDF file for the electronic version or paper version.

EDUCATION: Earl & Tom are working on a Proposal for Metro Government for our Safety & Education Program. We are asking for $2500 for the 2nd session of the Bike Ed classes. There was some heated discussion between Earl & Tom concerning the programs being taught by Barry Zalph, Bicycling for Louisville. It was decided not to turn in the proposal for the 2nd session, since classes start July 6th, and there was too much to do before then. At this time, it is not certain that we will turn one in for the 2010 sessions either. Tom will get together with Barry & discuss Bike Ed programs.
