Due to unsafe riding conditions and the continued threat of rain, the Baptist East Milestone Wellness Center ride scheduled for 2:00 PM is cancelled.
I will not be at the ride start to sign people up or explain why we don't condone riding in the rain
Please make an effort to attend the General Membership Meeting at 4:00 PM at the Wellness Center.

With light rain already and forecast 100% of more today I am canceling this ride today.  I will be at the ride start to inform anyone that shows up and did not see this.

Sunday's century goes to Orleans, Indiana, and one of the best eating places this side of the Mississippi.  Barring an unexpected deluge between now and then, it is the original route and will climb the Devil's Backbone passing "The House of a Thousand Dogs."  Please note that the original route is not the route ridden as a TMD stage two years ago.  The starting place is different so if you go to the park, you will be there alone.  I will put the alternate route on next year sometime.

The 55 mile option stays with the century route to Medora passing the covered bridge.  The shorter route will NOT be swept, however, even to the store stop as the century riders will want to get in before darkness falls UNLESS someone wants to volunteer to sweep the shorter route.  Heck, the century riders may need to drop me to get in before dark.  I have put on my winter weight, have not been riding much, have been riding slowly when I do ride, and have been exceedingly grouchy.

The short route is flat, but is vulnerable to the wind:  there just is no place to hide.  While it is not the route we were riding that day, I always grin to myself thinking of the look on Mule's face one ride when he once asked if the wind was ever calm here.  The answer is.....a resounding NO, not in the fall, winter, or spring.

Feel free to e-mail or call with questions.  Puddle

To those who are interested in riding this month’s populaire:

The Bourbon Populaire will start at the Buffalo Trace Distillery Visitor’s Parking Lot. We are starting promptly at 10:00 (9:45 Wheelman Time), this is the same time that the Gift Shop opens, and arriving early may mean the gate is shut. The parking lot is also accessible through Fair Oaks Lane past the gas station. I should already be there.

A few words about the route:

Due to the course concentrating on visiting the distilleries, there is no food directly on the route-unless bourbon chocolates and bourbon jerky meet your dining requirements. There are however two places on the route where I have marked deviations to gas stations/McDonalds. The first is at mile 18.9, the second at mile 32, approximately half way. Deviations from the route do not count as mileage. All the distilleries should have water, if not at a water fountain, then at a sink.

Secondly, there is one mile of gravel. It is rather fine gravel, well beaten down into the dirt. It could be muddy. You may wish to ride a bike that is not too precious to get dirty.

Finally, the route visits both sides of the Kentucky River Valley, for those familiar with the topography. For those not, you may want to note that I used the word “topography” to give you an idea of what the roads might be like.

Looking forward to seeing many of you come out.

Since the ride schedule is published more frequently now but the  December schedule comes out later than previously, I wanted to get this out ahead of time.  Please don't be deceived by the dates on the scheduler.  Bethlehem will be on the 10th and the breakfast on the 3rd.  I will be adding a shorter version to the Bethlehem Century, but not to the breakfast century.  The shorter group will NOT be swept unless a volunteer steps up, but should stay with the century group at least into Bethlehem.

    *** NOTICE ***

The Mammoth Cave Overnight Century Weekend is CANCELLED for this coming weekend (11/5 and 11/6), as a result of lack of interest by a sufficient number of riders to make the event feasible.  As of today, only two participants (other than me) have made reservations at the Mammoth Cave Hotel.  I've advised by the hotel that reservations may be cancelled with full refund to your credit card if you call no later than Wednesday, November 2nd.   Mammoth Cave Hotel (270-758-2225).

The Mammoth Cave Overnight Century weekend is a great tradition and has been one of the better received rides on the schedule in years past, but this year I should have scheduled it earlier in the Fall, when we wouldn't have to start in the dark and when the weather would be more reliable.  The ride will be back on the Touring Schedule in 2012 for a date late in the Spring and/or early in the Fall.

Thank you to all who have enjoyed this extraordinary weekend ride through central Kentucky in the past and I hope you join us again in 2012.

I just talked with Joe Thomas. He asked that I let people know that the Yellow and Purple lot rides for tomorrow morning will start from the soccer field lot on Edith Street just off River Road.

The ride schedule lists the Thursday evening Sawyer Park ride as a 15/30.  I am dropping the 30 because of the early sunset.
