Stage 7 (Green River Century) Results

Sunday was Stage 7 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Green River Century.

Ride Report:
Another good day in Campbellsville. Seems like the weather for this ride is always decent, never perfect but never terrible, and today was no different. The good new of the morning was that Janice was back after her earlier spill .We start off be leaving Campbellsville by passing the "Druthers" (yes, the former burger queen,its still here, at least) and taking a right turn and quickly leaving the city.
With nice rolling terrain and two long downhills but only one uphill that I can remember, the group stays mostly together. Along with the hills we go past the Barren lake Dam and spillways. This first leg seemed to go by to fast, probably because the path to the first stop in Knifley was mostly done on fairly new roads. We were greeted by 2 very nice ladies who politely filled our water bottles while we waited in line.
We get back on the road and I immediately start climbing. I guess thats why I only remember one uphill to the store. This was a short 15 mile stretch that has some entertainment 14.5 miles into it when a puppy decided to chase us and would not give up. we all stopped and one rider carried the puppy back to the puppy's home(?). If you hear police reports from amish in Mannsville KY saying a guy in funny clothes opened up their door and threw a dog in I may know who that was. On a side note puppy have the same look as dogs in cars when they are being carried on a bike.To the dogs credit this did not deter him when I hear the dog showed up at the store in Mannsville.
As the ride continues we hit this short steep hill. which hampers our pace for a bit but it is worth it because of one of my favorite downhills in Kentucky is coming up. I really like this course because of the long fairly straight open stretches and the one awesome technical downhill. Its not very often you get to ride on a 1.7 miles road and never have to pedal in these here parts. Finally, we get to the hill which was a lot further down the road than I remember (KY 289,Marion county border). So many curves,so much banking and one curve seemed to last for about 200 degrees. It was like riding on a roller coaster definitely had to get those inside pedals up to avoid a pedal hit. Probably used up all this years dance moves getting down that hill. After we turn off the road we get on our last stretch to the lunch stop. Ride along the edge of a beautiful flat valley. I run out of water about a mile from the store and actually got an offer from shirtless dude hanging out in his carport. I respectfully declined and ride the next half mile to the store. We arrive at the St. Joe Grocery and its packed with cyclist and local and 2 poor souls working the grill and register. If your ever there might I suggest the Cheeseburger. Its a good one.
After a lengthy stay we are back on the road for the last thirty miles. Shortly down the road we roll through Raywick past the Biker Bar. Just going through that town reminds me of Astro. Miss you Mark, hopefully we will see you some time this year. Now on to the last major climb of the day. The beautiful climb up to the horseshoe bend overlook. When I arrive at the over look I'm greeted by a lady making water, tailgater style, right in front of the overlook. You never know what your gonna see on a bike ride. Luckily, after my vision returned I was able to look down in the valley below. I fear my eyesight had been permanently damaged by the welcoming committee when everything appeared hazy but others confirmed it was in fact hazy. After a regrouping we of again stopping at a church along the way to fill up water bottles and cleanse our demons. Good thing we filled up because the next 18 miles were filled with challenging roller and short steeps but the time just seemed to fly by. Hope we get to do this ride next year as well.

Stage 6 (Bethlehem Century for Medora) Results

Saturday 5-28 was Stage 6 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
Bethlehem (Replaced Medora due to flooding).

Ride Report:
Friday night our Captain was smart enough to check and found out that Medora was flooded. She was ready with an alternate route to Bethlehem. This route could be considered a little more challenging than Medora but still very entertaining and you get a little better break at the end of the ride.
The day started out promising with temps in the mid 60's. A little cool at the beginning but compared to the previous stage a lot more comfortable. The question remained would it stay that way. The ride started out very spirited, probably due to the best riding conditions of any stage this year. Rolling through Southern Indiana with times of chills and times of bliss we arrived at the first stop. I could not tell how long we had been riding but this leg of the trip seemed to go very fast and we were a nice sized group of 8-10 when we arrived. The good temperatures seemed to make the ride easier but our rabbit kept teasing us to catch him, and we did. This gave you great feeling moving fast, feeling good and getting a good workout all at the same time. Turns out our captain probably had a spirited ride as well when she backtracked 3-4 miles to find some riders that were having issues. Upon confirmation of our pace at the first store and feeling the temps would not remain nice a few of us decided to back off for our second leg of the trip to Hanover.
This comfortable pace was not to last though. Our small group rolled through Bethlehem and started out assent out of the river valley when what do be see up the hill but a couple of out fellow Mad Dogs. This started a chase. This hill is a formidable hill but the combination of chasing and trying not to be caught made this hill seem short. Before we knew it we were at the top of the hill. We resume a comfortable pace and after a missed turn and a flat stretch on the plateau we see our rabbit again with a few others. The temps were still cool and we were running a section with 90 degree turns of alternating tailwind and crosswind. Feeling the Dogs need to chase we picked up the pace and caught our rabbits group. We remained together until Hanover but this was no small feat. The closer we got the more playful we got. The rabbit decided to try and mix things up a bit. This dog chased because He knew we had a break in a couple of miles but some of the others chased just because. Upon reaching Hanover half our group stopped a the always friendly Subway(eat fresh) and some decided to kept going to an alternate lunch stop about 15 miles down the road in Deputy.
Noting the amount of water left and feeling that our pace might slow a bit three others and I decide to continue. This turned out to be a good call. The temps seemed to cool down a bit probably due to the easier pace and shady parts on this leg of the journey and we got to relax following the creek along deputy pike. I even had enough breath to chuckle when we crossed a bridge that use to remind us to do something "Everday". We arrive at deputy and stop at the grocery for lunch. Turned out to be a very fine choice. With a grilled ham and swiss, Funyuns and a strawberry shake this was one happy dog. Thumbs up on the lunch. Next time, The burger gets its judgement. Back on the bike and off to Scottsburg. With the effects of the Shake and still relatively cool temps I notice goose bumps. While on our way to Scottsburg I notice we are also getting caught by another group. Turns out it's the other dogs we ran into Hanover with. With the food digesting/digested here we go again. We seem to make it there pretty fast and discussion start about possibly going on but luckily a few voices of reason urge us to stop. We decide to check a radar since there were some very dark cloud in front of us. Turns out that's all it was, just dark clouds.
We take off one at a time from the store and group up in a couple of small groups. With the combination of the front group eventually slowing, the rabbit taking off again and the back group speeding up we re gather , minus the rabbit. Knowing the rabbit is out there by himself we crest the second to last hill on Bloomington trail. What's great about this section is you can really get moving till you get to the last lil' hill. While frolicking in this little fast section we lose one of our riding partners and another mentions, "Oh, Yea, he was cramping up." Upon finding out this information we ease up a bit to make sure he's ok. While easing up find our rabbit and our straggler gets back to the group. With a "If you, don't mind, I'd rather not stop." from out straggler we continue our ride back to the park at a nice relaxed pace. All in all a great day for a ride with temps ranging from mid 60's to 78 degrees. It's about time we had weather like this. Hope everyone else had a good ride.

Stage 5 (Salem Century) Results

Sunday was Stage 5 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Salem Mad Dog Century.
Ride Report:
Finally some dry weather for one of the oldest centuries we have. The day started off on a high note with Cake Balls for Ben Merediths Birthday and his,and a few others, first TMD century stage of the year. We had our biggest turnout of the year which was not a big surprise since we finally had warm weather with lower chances of storms. If we got we at least it should be a fairly warm rain. As it turns out we all managed to weave our way through the rain and even saw a few bolts of lightning off in the distance. The day started out mild with the sun drying out most roads by the time we got to them. Seems like the warmer temperature made us ride faster but we may have had a little help in the form of a tailwind. We started out dodging road construction for the first 8 miles or so and also found out where the buffalo roamed, South Henryville, as we approached our first store stop.
When we left the first stop it was obvious the Sun was warming us and the air and it started to feel almost like summer. After the climb up Leota hill it started to feel downright hot and the sweat started stinging the eyes. Still this was better than most days have been this touring season. Once we were up the hill it was apparent why we seemed like we were moving fast. We had a few legs south and were greeted by a decent headwind. It made the ride more difficult but the wind also helped cool us down. Along the way we got greeting from various Amish families, Saw half an house(evident form the lack of electrical outlets) and realized a basement was being dug. These people really know how to build. We finally made it into Salem and as usual everybody scatters for lunch.
Well now what, Time to head back to Henryville. We were treated with more heat head tail and cross wind and I m dropped by my group. On Bloomington trail this rider feels a little free on the bike looks down and notices a loose seat post clamp. Time to fix it and count my lucky stars. While I stop to fix it a few riders that I was at lunch with pass and ask if I need help. I mention that I am fine but they stop for moral support anyway. That's one of the great things about these TMD rides. I get'er tightened down and am back on the way to Henryville. With in a mile. I'm dropped for the second time on this leg of the trip. Finally I make it back to Henryville and there are a lot of riders there.
Looks like the heat and lack of training are getting to few. Realizing I need either sugar or to cool down I go for one of the the best inventions known to the food industry, Ice Cream. A delicious, King size, Ice cream sandwich to be exact. After a nice rest a bunch of people take off in the span of a couple of minutes. The group never really comes together and eventually split into two groups rolling back to Jeff. The dark clouds start to appear. I start to think "Oh, no Don't rain". But a great thing happens the clouds cool the afternoon heat considerably and I start to think, "Rain might not be so bad". As luck would have it we didn't get wet but were heading south into a thunderhead that were heading north east. We get as far east and south as our course takes us and to my surprise, no cloudburst. We then head east to the finish narrowly escaping. While on our way east we notice the south headwind we had is now a southwest headwind. Well, you can't win 'em all. We then notice another thunderhead to our north. Finally back to the parking lot and Dry. Seems like mother nature was toying with us most the day. I think there were a few tired dogs at the end of this one. That's evident from some of the team/group names. Brains may have been a little cooked today. Two DNF's today. From what I understand pain was involved, I'm sure T will be back better than before. And, one returned before lunch. Everyone has a a bad day sometimes and It looks like she was not alone today.

Lots of movement in both divisions Gizmo lost a couple of minutes to Diesel Dog, Timothy is breathing down Ted's neck trying to get the White back.

Stage 4 (Crestwood Killer) Results

Saturday was Stage 4 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Crestwood Killer.

Ride Report:
One tough ride that we generally do in late in the year when we are in better shape and the temps are starting to cool off. We knew we had 7 big hills but the couple of flat stretches on US 42 always get the ol' ticker pumping as well. By my count I felt the pulse in my temple on 3 separate occasions. This is a reminder my pulse is probably above 180. Ahh, good times!
The weather was fairly good for the most part. We started off by beating a train and had drizzle, one brief period of light rain, one major hill and mild temperatures to the first store stop in Bedford.
As we left the store the heavy drizzle started again for about a half a mile then the weather cleared up and I believe the sun came out a couple of times. This section featured 2 major climbs. On the first climb one rider even made it with a broke chain. As we crested the second hill on this section a familiar minivan was still in the field and the Goats were still taking shelter in it while on the opposite side of the street a big hairy dog and a mama pitbull (both unchained) informed us that we were not suppose to go into their yard, or they were yelling for the sun to come out and cook those goats in the van so they could eat lunch. This left one big downhill and a long flat stretch to our lunch stop. As we approached our turn for the big ol' downhill another rider who got off course approached from the other direction and we all proceeded on what can be a delightful downhill. Well as luck would have it our downhill was slowed down by a truck that had got in front of us and slowed us down [:(]. After a nice flat stretch that seemed to go into the headwind forever we ended up at the DQ with a few going to the Subway.
As we are getting ready to leave 2 familiar riders show up. Now I usually arrive a little late to rides but these two. Guess there in pretty good shape since they caught us. As we left lunch we immediately start climb #4 of the day out of Milton. Once we get off 421 we have a nice low traffic trip across the ridge down another nice hill. We then travel along the river to pas the power plant,that always makes me sing the Simpsons theme, to Wises Landing. It so nice and peaceful down here that it lets you start to fear the climb up Gills Ridge road. The only good thing about climbing Gills Ridge is that Bray's orchard, our last stop, is at the top. Today was a lucky day the store was stocked with Ice Cream. I recommend the Maple Walnut. Five hills down and after a short stay we are on the road again.
A brief light rain forces some riders to stop and put on jackets while a few continue. We eventually drop back down towards Westport but before we can get there we gotta climb 1488 to get to our connecter road. Then after the climb we roll along the ridge and another big drop down the roughest road of the day. After an peaceful ride its time for the climb to 42 (again) for climb number seven, The same road we came down that morning. Once at the top of the hill this seemed like a good spot to re gather and a frisbee toss breaks out till we get together our group for our last trip down 42. The hills are taking their toll at this point and I start to hear a complaint about how French Fries for lunch wasn't such a good idea. This hurts me deep to my core and I rebut by saying "Its not the Fries its the course" and the biggest argument I have is that there are 3 who didn't have fries weren't doing any better. We finally leave 42 for the last time and the rollers over us over to remind you how tired your legs are. Everything 's going great, you can smell the barn then all of a sudden with 3 miles to go a quick heavy down pour. Whew, thought that was gonna be bad,little did I know. We finally make it back to 146 for out last mile. Mother nature decides to remind us there was a chance of storms today with a nice heavy downpour and a couple of rumbles of thunder for our last mile back to the lot. All in all a good day on one of the toughest rides we have.

At lunch two riders informed us of a navigation error made by some of the participants. This deviation from the course resulted in a tenth of a mile increase in the overall distance of the ride. Because of this deviation everyone who took the long cut will incur a 30 second penalty as denoted by (^).
Looks like we will have some movement on the podium. Results to come later after I get the bonus adjusted.

Also not that the 5th stage is the last Stage to enter the Tour De Mad Dog Challenge. Mother nature has been toying with up all year and giving us some reasons not to ride. Cold, Rain and Thunder to name few. In fact I think the only stage where it didn't rain was stage 3 but the roads were probably wet. I'm not much into praying ,chanting or channeling spirits but I think I will this week. I would suggest all you riders out there try to do the same and hope mother nature turns the water works off this Sunday. At midnight on Friday I plan to make some sacrifices to the Gods. I got some old thin shorts, tore up gloves, old socks and I'm sure I can find an old jersey somewhere, Anyone care to join in?

Tomorrow is stage 4 of the 2011 version of the Tour De Mad Dog--- The Crestwood Killer ---
An aptly named ride that I have heard described as "a fairly flat century plus 7 big hills".
Hopefully we will have good weather for this difficult stage that has an outside DQ as a lunch stop. (There is also a Subway if DQ ain't your thang)

So keep in mind the website may not be fully accurate. Grab a cuesheet at the sign up to be certain.
Also noteworthy is the 7:00 Start time. Our stages generally start at 7:00 or 8:00 and this is our first 7:00 of the year.
Same as in year past the 5th stage is the last stage you can get registered to enter the Tour De Mad Dog Challenge.
Stage 5 will be next Sunday May the 22th "Salem Century". If you haven't entered the challenge this year, barring cancellations, these will be your last 2 stages to do so.
Seems like the weather might have kept some people away for stage 3 and because of that there has been some movement in the Standings

We had some changes in both divisions. Larry held on to the Men's Yellow Jersey while Nita Bernat took the Women's Yellow jersey. (Video review is still pending since the Fall of the Current yellow jersey, just kidding)
Theresa held on to her White jersey while Ted ,guess a broke derailler isn't gonna stop him, King took away the men's.
Congratulations to the jersey holders. There has been a lot of movement this year. Guess we'll se what happens tomorrow on the course.

Stage 2 (Lawrenceburg Loop) Results

Saturday was Stage 2 of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
The Lawrenceburg Loop.

Ride Report:
One tough ride that we generally do in the earlier months of the year. This day was no different. Well, maybe it was. The warmer than normal temperatures warned us that there may be a chance of rain or storms. The temperatures at the start had people dressing in about every fashion possible. Sleeveless, Arm warmers, jackets, vest,leg warmers and tights. Up to the first stop in Baghdad the weather seemed better that it had been since last October. Peaks of sunshine, Light wind not to hot, not to cold It was kinda like baby bears porridge, just right. The ride from Baghdad to Lawrenceburg was a little different. Left Baghdad with nice conditions then rain came, lightning came, Hail came. I have never seen (jellybean size)hail before on a bike ride. Luckily we had already stopped when this had started. I think all riders got to escape this by taking cover where it could be found. Eventually the hail and rain subsided and we got to continue to Lawrenceburg. This was kinda like Baby bears chair; Just right then Crack,bang a bad break. The third Leg from Lawrenceburg to Mt. Eden started with wet roads but the sun came out quickly and dried them up and brought with it some hills and lightly traveled roads. This seemed to be that day we were all looking forward too. Baby bears Bed,you get the picture. Now what could look forward to for the last leg of our journey. Leaving Mt. Eden we took a right right into some bad headwind, Papa Bears Bed, Finally we got to take a right on 44 for some nice tailwind, Mama bears Bed. Now where to go from here. A left onto Rockbridg. The story appeared to be over here. Back to reality,headwind and hills. Luckily this was not to long of a stretch and we got to 53. Here's where the story started back up again. Seems like the bears found us in there automobiles and chased us back to the start. Ah, a storybook ride.

Stage 1 (Honest Abe Century) Results

Yesterday we had the first century stage of the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog.
Results below the Ride Report.

I would like to thank Susan and John Pyron for putting on this event.

Ride Report:
This was a new ride for me and provided some new roads that will be memorable for quite a while. The day started out like many March mornings on the cool side but the previous nights snow was only visible on the grass and houses. All of the snow that hit the road was either gone or left a few wet patches on the edge of the road and in the potholes. Fourteen riders started the ride and were broken into basically 2 groups. The first 50 miles provided us with tail and crosswinds which helped keep the cold at bay. Our group pulled into the first Store stop (around 22 miles)just as most of the first group was leaving. When we lef the store it seemed to be a bit colder but I knew I’d get warmed up fast on the hill that was just south of the store. We kept rolling and made our way past The Jim Beam,Booker Noe Plant. The Sweet Smell of fermenting Bourbon filled the air and made the trip towards Boston even more enjoyable. We continue to New Haven deciding it best to continue past to our turn around, Lincoln’s Boyhood Home. As we started our return we had about five miles straight into the headwind to go until the lunch stop. After just that 5 mile stretch we would realized this would not be as easy as the trip out was and knew I had better fill the belly with some good lunch. Luckily, Diesel Dog spotted a beacon of light at the red light in town on our way through the first time. It said “Home Cooking”. Diesel joined me at the Shortline diner. In years past we had ate at the same establishment, under a different name, before. The last year or two it was a Mexican restaurant. As we pull in a familiar face opens the door and says ya’ll come on in and warm up. Turns out this is the same lady who use to run the Diner previous to the mexican restaurant. We were treated to the Angus Shortline burger with a grilled bun. This was a real good burger. Who knew the bottom buns sole purpose was to soak up the grease and not let it escape the resting place of my Belly. Fries accompanied my burger While Diesel Dog had the homemade chips. The only bad thing about this place was having to leave before getting a slice of homemade pie. Susan and John waited patiently for use to get ready and start heading back. We hoped on out Trusty steeds and headed back for the car. On our way back we got a great treat. Sunshine. This treat seemed to make the headwind more bearable and warmed us up a bit. We ended up catching up to AnchorDog and Chilly Dog who we using the “Nutirition and Hydration” method to ride the days event. Back past the Distillery even better. You could smell the progression of bourbon from fermenting to the mash to the boiling. Ahhh!!!! In and out of the last stop with 22 mile left we were warned about the bad drivers in these parts by the beer breath customer at the counter. Luckily he was walking home across the street. We get back to Shepherdsville where it generally helps to have your head on a swivel and a weird thing happened. Most of the drivers were nice. I saw many opportunities where drivers often pass us to turn right in front of us but today patience was the norm and we had a lot of drivers waiting for us. After one more hydration leak we finally arrived back at the start point. I started out the day not sure if wanted to ride to being real glad I did. I hope everyone ride was enjoyable.

2011 Tour De Mad Dog Starts Sunday

All interested,
Weather permitting this weekend the 2011 Tour De Mad Dog will start.
We start the Tour with a Prologue time trial. This will be a 6 mile fairly flat route going down and up Commerce parkway just outside Lagrange, Ky.
This is one of only 2 times in the Tour that your actual time will actually count. The other being the uphill time trial in September. Come out early to get warmed up. We will be taking off in one minute intervals. Just so you don't come all the way out to Lagrange for a 6 mile ride. We will be having a tough little 35 miler after the Prologue. As with all club rides they are open, but to be elligable for the Tour De Mad Dog Challenge you will need to be an LBC Club Member. Hope to see a few faces I haven't seen in a while. First rider goes off at 9:30.

2011 Tour De Mad Dog Schedule and changes

To all interested,

Time to start gearing up for the riding season. I'm looking forward to another year of riding and eating as much as I want. To do that I tend to ride alot. I have been apart of the TMD for many years and always look forward to March when it all starts. Every year more and more people show up and there are always new faces. We started out as a small group of people and sometimes we would stay together the whole ride. Every year we have grown in numbers and sometimes I don't even realize we have new riders. It is getting to the point where 60 people will show up for a century. With the expansion of the group we need to remember why we do this. RIDING IS FUN!,etc. When people train for the goal of a century and need a comfortable, encouraging environment to ride in we have been there since 2004. This is evident by the number of people who show up at TMD Stages. The desired group of 6 or more riders at the finish is in place to help the newer riders,help the older riders, and he
lp any rider who may not be having his or her best day. There is much joy in helping your fellow rider reach a new goal or help them when they need reassurance that they can do it. Groups of people can accomplish great things.

The 2011 Tour de Mad Dog Schedule is set. The rules this year have not changed but there will be 2 new bonuses added to the drawn pool of bonuses.
First off I'll start with the bonuses.
1. There will be a LBC Ride captain bonus. This Bonus will be 10 seconds for a max to 2 minutes(12 rides) for any club member who has captained and turned in ride sheets for ANY club ride(s) during the touring season which is from March 1st to October 31st. this will be determined by me from looking on the club statisticians website.

2. There will be a LBC Ride captain bonus. This Bonus will be 5 seconds for a max to 1 minute(12 rides) for any club member who has captained and turned in ride sheets for ANY club ride(s) during the touring season which is from March 1st to October 31st. this will be determined by me from looking on the club statisticians website.

These aim of these 2 bonuses is to help the touring schedule. I'm sure there are some new routes out there that people know about and hopefully they will share them with the club. Also, I know some of the usual routes need ride captains from time to time as well. The Recovery rides, Burdorfs rides and Saturday Slow and Easys come to mind. The VP of touring and every ride captain should be able to direct you as to how to become a ride captain.
